Mixtape Analysis - (Ella)

Who is the target audience as defined by age, social class and gender, viewing platform/ place of exhibition as well as content of the film (MixTape).

The short film ‘Mix Tape’ is evidently aimed at females aged 25 and over, presumably with children. To find the target audience for this specific film the genre and characters are the key. The genres of the film are ‘Romance’ and ‘Musical’. Typically both these genres appeal to females, also the music used in the short film would appeal to an older generation. The female audience are attracted to the generic love/romance storyline of the boy being in love with the girl next door. It would remind them of their youth and give them a sense of nostalgia as it is from their youth “its my dads music”. Also the use of a mixtape as opposed to a CD would create nostalgia for the older audience. The characters also target this demographic as they are children, which generically in this context are seen as cute and appeal to parents etc.

This could also attract short film fans and film fanatics in general as it was highly acclaimed with critics and won many awards such as Grand Prize, Virgin Media Shorts 2009 and Best Film, Purbeck FF 2010. This would then be furthered as it was exhibited at short film festivals and is easily accessible online through Youtube. Its viewing platforms being primarily Youtube and Vimeo also mean it could possibly attract a younger audience such as teenagers as they are the highest and most frequent users of these specific sites.

  1. Ella - there only appear to be 3 of your Summer HW film analyses posted here. Can you speak to me to explain please, as this is now past the deadline for posting this material (last Friday). The Analysis of Silent Things is good, with appropriate levels of detail. They appear to get progressively shorter though, and Mixtape is very short. Please add to these with more detail, keeping the focus on the concept you were asked to apply. Make sure that you are fully applying theory, using examples, and applying particular parts of the concepts. Where is your AS evaluation (also due last Friday)?
